The mindset has to be there in you want concentration on a topic and the mindset has to be there if you're willing to learn at something new each day and each time you rehearse with the section or ensemble. If the attitude is not there, you're not 100% focused. It is simple as that.
As mentioned before, when staying focused, whether it'll be during sectionals or rehearsal, and it can not be stressed out even more, you will learn at least something by giving Mr. Hire and everyone your attention for 40 minutes per day, in class. By staying engaged, your development shows in the long run, that you've grown as a person and that you are serious about what you are doing. With this, you can all work on self-improvement and collaboration to get a better sense of how your part of the music lines up, support or create melodies within the repertoire because what is a product without its dreams, ideas, work and time put into it.
To elaborate, I'll present a situation the Symphony Orchestra was once in (may be under/over exaggerated). While preparing for a concert that up and coming, we lacked preparation, overall, due to state testing and Advanced Placement testing, so we were rushing to prepare for the Spring concert. Throughout, we requested sectionals throughout the time we had left before the concert, and somehow, we did it. We blew everyone, including ourselves, away following the performance. Here's the catch. It was our work ethic with Mr. Hire and with ourselves that got us from being unprepared, to being completely prepared under a short time. We did not say "we do not have enough time", or "we can not do it, there's no way", or "whatever". We said, "Okay, less than a month away, let's make the most out of it and see where we can go." And that is what is key to becoming more efficient and effective for yourselves and the ensemble you are in.
Curate yourselves, engage in what is important to you. Work hard as you often think about a topic.
