What is the Focus?

Surely, we all love to do something out of the ordinary and not have worry at all but being professional requires some level of self-control and focus on the task at hand. Obviously, during rehearsal we do not all retain our focus 100% of the way through, even I'll admit to, but the moments that our focus is directed to either Mr. Hire or to anyone on the podium, we learn at least something either it'll be something we know or something that plays a role in what and how we approach our repertoire.

By directing our attention to the person leading the group, ensemble, organization, etc, we are acknowledging their words and actions, and are being respectful to him/her, so in-return they can offer more insight on the task. Additionally, by engaging with either individual or section, we'll learn how other parts of the orchestra, whether it'll be the brass section or woodwind section, come together to make music. With that in mind, as our focus span increases with every little step or action we take on as individuals within the section, we tend to appreciate what we are learning each and every moment together as an ensemble or as a section of the orchestra, whether you're in the back of the orchestra, middle or even front of the orchestra. Each person has a chance to make the most out of it by simply diverting attention and time to the task at focus.

More importantly, is your time focusing on the section leader during sectionals when Mr. Hire has allotted time, purposely, for you, all as a group of the orchestra, to manifest this sense of maturity and level of responsibility that he knows you are all capable of. So make the most of it, and pay attention to whoever is leading the sectional, suggest ideas, get engaged, become more willing to understand the surroundings, and that, is how grow into becoming better musicians yourselves because no one will openly help you walk through each little step, but it's the momentum you create through concentration is what becomes your habits, and what becomes a part of you.
